good morning mate how are you good morning John brother I am fantastic as
0:42
usual man blessed and uh happy to be here huh happy Tuesday to you happy Tuesday we skipped a week uh we don’t
0:49
often skip a week uh but we did skip a week nothing went out last week um traveling and it just didn’t work out
0:55
with our schedules so we’re back at it and we were traveling for the Str wealth conference uh we’re in Nashville a very
1:04
interesting show high high energy lots lots of crazy takeaways lots of
1:09
interesting takeaways a lot of great conversations I do want to say that and our guest today on no BS is the one and
1:18
the only John Ann of ohana stays and Tech tape John thanks so much for
1:25
joining us hey man welcome to the show brother well thanks for having me guys uh you know I just you know I’ve been
1:31
wanting to get on your show for a while and that’s great that we’re able to connect to talk about the Str wealth
1:37
conference uh and then uh and other topics as well so thanks for having me man absolutely yeah so interesting story
1:44
uh John was supposed to join us on an advocacy um an advocacy when we had probably six
1:51
months ago or so maybe longer and uh it was just like him in Hawaii time and it
1:58
just at that time he’s in Jersey now um and that’s where he lives but yeah and it’s okay it’s all right we just
2:05
thought you were getting winning we hadn’t won them over yet uh so we could you know get them on not to play Hot to
2:10
get yeah if this is fashionably late you’re you
2:16
are the most Dapper yeah you know and to be fair we would see
2:21
John in person like all the time and it was always good to connect so like made me understand so we’re happy to have you
2:27
now thanks for uh thanks for jumping back on with us yeah awesome I let’s
2:33
let’s talk about I I definitely want to get into the SEO Wells but let’s let’s kind of tee you up a little bit let’s
2:38
talk about about you know why John and why are you on here you know those of us on the professional side of of the
2:46
industry know you and know you well you’ve you’ve you are a staple in the the circuits you know around the
2:53
industry but talk to us about you know what how did you get invested and
3:00
started in Hospitality how did you start you know on the focus on Tech and everything you’re doing like what was
3:05
your first like dipping your toe into you know Str yeah
3:11
um long story short I am an architect by training and so um I was in the real estate world I had
3:19
I went out on my own and um I did some single family new construction development on my own and as you know
3:27
when you’re doing development projects um Ash is always flowing out until you sell and so short-term rentals was
3:34
literally just kind of a side asset to generate some you know a small amount of
3:39
uh positive cash flow while I’m doing my development projects during that time though uh because I was
3:47
trying to make it as passive as possible I really invested a lot of time and energy in building the systems and
3:53
Technologies and because of that I’ve been rolling up my sleeves and trying
3:59
many many different Technologies as a expert end user and by doing that I’ve
4:04
gotten kind of a broad perspective of the tech landscape within our industry and how things work there are people who
4:11
know a lot more about very specific technology and I think I kind of can see the overall picture and see how pieces
4:17
fit together or don’t fit together and what the problems are and so once I had
4:23
that I started you know during covid a clubhouse room where I talked about technology and got a lot of the CEOs of
4:30
the tech companies uh joining the room you know they didn’t have anything better to do and I didn’t have anything better to do
4:36
out of that uh this kind of uh manifested no because I’ve learned some
4:42
things about John like recently that I can appreciate like at that dinner that we had in I what I love about your
4:49
journey John is like I’m gonna give you your flowers brother like you got a PhD in this space like you’re a professor
4:56
like when you talk about the world that you come from like you are a professional coming into a new
5:04
space right and to be able to make an imprint in like the period of time that
5:10
you had is like it’s actually it’s it’s pretty impressive like and the tech side
5:16
of it is interesting but there’s also the other play of like the advocacy side that you’re on right
5:22
like and that’s how we met how does a tech person get involved in an advocacy fight for an industry that he is so like
5:30
really just coming in and making an impact on like that’s not the normal Journey for a
5:35
lot of people like how did we end up here how did you get into that well advocacy gets thrown you away right I
5:41
was not a big you know personal advocacy in fact when I started my business I had looked up all the zoning and I thought I
5:48
was golden I thought you know I was Untouchable with uh regulations and then
5:53
some crazy regulations got thrown my way in my market and fortunate Market is for
5:59
those that don’t know your Market your Market is uh Honolulu specifically correct yes Honolulu and Hawaii and
6:06
there was long-standing regulation and then they flipped it upside down last August
6:11
um no two August ago I guess um and uh fortunately you know I was
6:18
friends with David Krause from responsibly and you know I had some friends in the industry so I basically
6:23
like what do we do and so I just had to like start firefighting right
6:28
um and along the way to me the most important thing is for our stakeholders to stay United and it’s very easy for
6:36
not intentionally but for stakeholders to be like you know I’m in the hotel you
6:42
know I’m in the apartment space so I don’t care about single family homes and you know I do like everyone can find
6:47
ways to kind of say I’m okay and those other guys are the problem so my first thing was just get everyone together so
6:54
that we don’t step on each other’s toes and that was really kind of uh I think my value at the advocacy fight and
7:01
that’s what we’re doing at the state level right now getting all the stakeholders on a weekly call so that we
7:07
stay United and coordinated what I mean not to sit here and spend too much time on
7:13
the advocacy here on Hawaii because we have talked to anybody but it is super super important so I don’t want to
7:19
downplay it are you making positive strides where where do you think this is
7:24
you know this is going because I just read the and we talked about this briefly at the beginning I just read
7:30
last week that you know overall the board of Tourism for Hawaii is basically
7:36
you know taking itself apart and they’re no longer going to be pushing and advocating for tortoise to come to
7:44
Hawaii with that said we all know that people’s dwarfs are still going to go to Hawaii it’s Hawaii
7:49
um but but there’s no reason in their mindset to go ahead and promote it anymore when there is this in their eyes
7:57
a fire to put up because there’s too many tourists in there whatever the case like do you think they’re a a positive
8:04
turn is happening or where do you see this playing out or how do you see this playing out well definitely there’s a positive turn
8:11
um one thing I’ll say is while they say they don’t want any more tourists they are approving more and more hotels in residential areas so
8:18
um you know yeah it really makes sense right positive outcome one uh we have
8:24
built the muscle that we can activate thousands of people on the moment’s notice when there are bills to you know
8:31
to be fought uh and so this time around at the state level there were lots of um
8:37
multiple bills that were essentially trying to legalize governmental takings of your property uh but we were able to
8:43
get people to show up testify and we got those bills deferred we are working we we are actually
8:51
creating a state level Alliance at this point uh and we have uh reps from the
8:56
Big Island from Maui and we’re finding someone from Kauai and obviously Oahu uh
9:02
so that we can work at the state level now uh and we’re getting a lot of support from the industry from the vrma
9:08
advocacy fund from rent responsibly uh and so I would say there are definitely
9:13
positive uh Trends but it’s we’re trying to be more offensive than always
9:19
defensive which is the game that we’ve been playing up till now so I feel positive about it but it’s a lot of work
9:25
and time and effort that I had never imagined I would be spending will kudos
9:31
to you and all those out there doing it because it’s a it’s important work and you guys have made some big strides so
9:37
you know great great work keep up the good work let’s not underplay like the the the ability to yeah I 100 kudos to
9:45
that but like to be on the offensive like you actually have to be there and so I think the key takeaway for everyone
9:53
listening to this podcast is you can’t be offensive if you’re not showing up
9:58
six seven months eight months a year two years like if if you’re in a location we
10:03
talk about this we’re beating this drum again if you’re in a location that everything’s peachy keen and nothing’s
10:09
wrong guess what shit’s gonna go wrong sometimes start showing up to your local meanings make yourself known be the
10:17
professional in your industry in your community show the up like you have to
10:22
be there because when you need to mobilize when you need to go ahead and do this like it’s super super important
10:29
that you’ve already built that Network and so you can go on the offensive right
10:34
the legislators if they know someone that you know they know who knows that topic they’ll reach out to you and say
10:41
hey you know we’re talking about short-term rentals you know can you educate me on this if they don’t know it
10:47
they’re going to take the same storyline that the hotels have been feeding down you know the industries through and you
10:54
know and make decision is based on those narratives right so it’s kind of like networking and business you can’t just
11:00
one day show up and ask someone to work with them right you have to have built a relationship in order to you know
11:07
develop that trust so or that LinkedIn or that linked at first LinkedIn message
11:13
you get for someone and they start pitching you and you have to you’re like dude come on
11:19
I love it you know it’s we’re really proud of you and what you’re doing on
11:25
that side of things and and I think that overall how you in in SAU is as in as in John
11:33
but I mean like the whole group of everyone that you’re working together like I think other communities in other
11:40
municipalities can look at what you’re doing and take a lot of a lot of great lessons of how you’re attacking this and
11:48
bring into their own communities um well Mateo’s doing the same thing with Astra in Atlanta and that whole
11:53
group there you know a lot of positive things you learn from the mistakes learn from the positive outcomes of these
12:00
different you know advocacy efforts in apply the learning like you don’t have to start from the ground ground zero
12:06
every time there’s a lot of ground there’s a lot of work that’s been done and utilized for responsibility I can’t
12:12
can’t cannot emphasize this enough um no they are not a sponsor of the
12:18
podcast but they are great friends and they are and speaking of tall shout out
12:23
Mateo and I are very very excited to be on the uh upcoming rent responsibly
12:29
um in April there’s a podcast takeover uh virtual Summit so we’re excited to have a presentation and that as well on
12:36
day two yeah so we’re excited about that all right back to John I know we want to
12:41
get into um the show we want to talk about the you know the SEO wealth but let’s talk
12:46
about tech tape a little bit you know you you put yourself in a position where you by default or by you know immersing
12:55
yourself in the world of SDR and the tech because you were you were a user
13:01
you were trying it all out you’re trying to understand what works together like what is Tech tape
13:06
like to those that don’t know what the hell is Tech tape John like why did you want to become a vendor in this space
13:12
right now right bringing some new Nick pausing are your hands full enough
13:19
I guess I think of myself as a problem solver right uh and so
13:24
when I see first one I run into problem my motto is if I run the same problem
13:30
two or three times that means there’s a systematic solution to it right uh and
13:35
so that’s how I built my business but what I see in the industry because I have a lot of friends who are operators
13:41
is different people are running into the same problems over and over and over
13:46
again it’s a tremendous amount of wasted effort of time energy stress so the name
13:53
Tech tip um you know it’s duct tape for the for the Str industry right so there’s a lot
14:00
of amazing Technology Solutions out there uh probably too many but they
14:06
don’t all talk to each other they don’t all work with each other and so you know what I was doing was trying to switch
14:12
one from the other trying to solve a problem that problem would get solved but then things that were working would get broken so what tech tape really does
14:20
is it takes what would be considered the best in class for whatever issue you’re
14:25
trying to solve within the industry and the Best in Class might be different for me than for you and for you know
14:31
different people and as long as it’s solving a specific problem then making
14:36
the Technologies work together even if the um you know the the developers of the
14:43
technology haven’t integrated it perfectly yet right so that’s really the fundamental behind Tech tape and so it’s
14:50
not like a general technology piece it’s actually for people who have experience running
14:57
their Tech stack no one can identify a couple you know very specific pain points and then we can work together to
15:05
kind of solve those uh those pain points so that’s John your MacGyver
15:11
yes it’s it’s a formalized approach but yes it’s it’s a MacGyver approach and I
15:19
call it defragmenting the fragmented uh Tech space right making the technology make sense for your business you know so
15:26
that that’s what tech tape uh provides and then on top of that we also provide Revenue Management Services uh just it’s
15:33
it’s another area that a lot of folks struggle with and uh we’ve found the
15:39
systematic approach so for those that are listening if you’re using if your Tech stack is if you’re happy with your
15:46
text or you’re not happy with your Tech Sac but for whatever reason there are pieces that aren’t working as seamlessly
15:52
as possible that aren’t you know they’re not talking to to each other or there’s a part of your Tech that’s just like man
16:00
what the [ __ ] this this could be doing this better like talk to John reach out
16:05
to Tech tape and and if he doesn’t have a solution he can help you come up with a solution is that did I did I say that
16:12
correct yes that’s that’s um MacGyver and
16:21
so like ideally what is that what’s your what’s your ideal client type like who
16:27
who is who is Tech tape for today hectate is for someone who has you know
16:33
a couple or a year or two at least have experience under their belt have already felt the pain of trying to
16:41
run a seamless short-term rental company um it’s
16:46
it’s not that I don’t want to work with you know someone who’s just jumping in but when you’re just jumping in you just don’t know what that pain point is yet
16:53
and so that’s when you’re like you know chasing the shiny object right and um it’s actually when you know hey
17:01
this is really my pain Point that’s when we can work together to try to solve it love it let me love it so great there
17:09

17:33
five star review leave a written review if you’re listening on Apple podcast we truly truly appreciate it and um thank
17:40
you yeah and if you’re on YouTube like listen subscribe hit that notification button uh you know the drill that’s uh
17:48
much appreciated thank you let’s talk about Str wealth we all there is a ton
17:54
of Buzz about Str wealth and me in my new role at direct I said we need to be
18:03
there I said direct direct needs to be there there’s a thousand attendees
18:09
most of them are are hosts or investors in in that space they are getting their
18:17
feet wet or their feet are wet but they’re you know they’re more than they might have five they might have two
18:23
properties a lot of people I talked to had one property they’re just getting really excited about it but they’re
18:28
looking to scale they’re looking to grow there’s a lot of excitement around Str and where we’re going and
18:36
I I watched some videos from last year before I made the call I talked to some people and to me I’m like
18:44
all right this is a a an interesting gamble um from a vendor to go in but but I I
18:50
think it it makes sense and we all attended
18:56
um there’s a lot of people in attendance a thousand plus I’m actually there’s more than a thousand because there’s
19:02
lots of people that I know that we all know that couldn’t get tickets that still showed up to Nashville
19:10
um they still showed up to Nashville yeah and there was like masterminds going around like on outside there’s all
19:18
sorts of people outside of that didn’t actually get their foot in the door but were still participating in the bus that
19:25
is scr wealth so I guess first of all kudos to to the team there for building
19:33
an excitement and in like this is only year two over a thousand attendees and of the
19:40
Thousand attendees it’s mostly attendees and not as many vendors right some other
19:46
conferences it’s like half vendors or more sometimes we we went there we went
19:53
there you know no disrespect to Burma bring Forum just a few weeks earlier it
19:59
was two-thirds vendors it was like and we already talked about it I’m not going to sit here and Bash Burma we’re proud
20:04
Burma we’re all vrma members um love what verm is doing hope they can turn this around I know they will turn
20:11
this around but let’s go back to oh where are we going I see I see your face
20:17
there’s a gap that needs to be bridged in and again I’ll probably get in
20:23
trouble for saying this but I I feel like this is just the truth like
20:28
the reason scr wealth is successful is because they’ve tapped into a pool with
20:35
something different with something that’s exciting with something that is courting a group that we’ve done a
20:40
horrible job of courting and bringing into the fold of our space of
20:47
hospitality and I don’t give a [ __ ] about bickering around names and these
20:52
other things but I there is a gap that is clearly being filled by other
20:58
entities because no one’s addressing it and no one’s talking about it and it is
21:05
a discussion that I think the RMA needs to have with it itself in in terms of its identity and and being as large as
21:13
it is and as important as it is to our industry but there’s a level of growth I
21:18
think that needs to happen that were they would be a hundred percent the beneficiary of the industry would be a
21:23
100 the beneficiary of because we’re all in this thing together and the more you
21:31
know the more of us that are are in this space together in our are creating an
21:36
environment that regardless of the stage or space that you’re at that you are
21:41
learning professional practices you’re aware of the technology you’re building a good business you’re you know aligned
21:48
in the regulatory fights like all of the things and you know where to go for resources right like the things vrma has
21:55
these people need right it’s awesome to and the thing that I love about the scr wealth is like yeah it’s it’s generating
22:02
it’s the business side of me like generate the business get the business but then I feel like there’s a second
22:08
part that has to be that has to be talked about that’s like all right you got it but what do you do now right
22:14
right like now what right now you’ve got it now you’ve got to grow now you’ve grown now you’ve scaled now you’ve done
22:20
all these but now how do you make it successful how do you make it profitable how do you you know weigh your risks how
22:26
do you learn how to build from 10 to 20 to 200 right like with other people like
22:32
you’re in a different ball game now I am I agree I agree and I think that the the
22:37
interesting thing and you know I want to get to to that next step and what that is but I also want to get what’s John
22:44
what’s your initial takeaway did you go to first of all did you this is your second SEO wealth
22:51
yes I went last year okay so what what are your takeaways from now coming you
22:57
know two years to SEO wealth so first of the foremost here is exactly right this
23:03
is like I call it like a parallel universe of short-term rentals right there’s one Universe at the VR Bay
23:09
there’s one at stairwell and then there’s another one at imn and so
23:15
they’re like this spread markets but we’re all in the same space and you know we do need to unify so that’s that’s one
23:22
the other thing is what’s really exciting and like you know
23:27
the the buzz around SDR wealth is it’s part kind of like Mastermind like Tony
23:33
Robbins type you know like you can do it you know we’ve done it other people have
23:38
done it you can do it that kind of motivational but there is substance behind it right and I’m not saying 22
23:43
weapons doesn’t have substance I’m just saying no no it’s not a substance yeah
23:51
a little bit a little bit looking out in a or or and again I don’t want to come
23:57
across in in a bad way and I and I wasn’t sure if I’d seen to use this word but I am going to use the word
24:03
um and this is no disrespect to what I’m doing for those that are it’s almost it’s a little bit predatory and I and I
24:11
don’t mean that in a bad way but it’s it there’s a capitalization aspect of it like everything’s really [ __ ] expensive there’s like like they’re
24:19
building a like a fomo atmosphere that like if you don’t come to the show right
24:25
now you learn these kit these tips and tricks to go ahead and be successful you’re gonna be on the outside and
24:31
there’s nothing wrong with that but at the same time I feel that those that aren’t well
24:36
grounded that don’t have a good solid business Foundation that just go into it
24:42
like you know very excited because of the you know the Flash and bang and the excite in the you know that it could be
24:50
not everyone’s gonna gonna come out of his you know they’re gonna invest and they’re gonna maybe possibly make some
24:56
bad decisions but that’s life and it is what it is and you know I don’t so it’s not a bad thing it’s just that’s my take
25:03
on the vibe I’m sorry back to you John well I mean definitely I mean it’s a business venture right there are it’s
25:08
it’s to make money and you know we’re all out to make money right I would flip
25:15
what you search on a little bit yes they’re creating the buzz and everything so that there’s fomo but that is what’s
25:21
actually creating the excitement um around it and like drawing a lot of people and again for example if the RMA
25:29
could tap into that kind of uh 100 way to draw people in you know it could be
25:36
pretty amazing right so but the thing that I would say is vrma as well you
25:41
know some people spend a lot of money going to those and don’t get a lot out of it either right so
25:47
um I would say yay you know yeah I was gonna say in all fairness like none of it is cheap but I think what you see is
25:55
look at the amount of people that are willing to invest in themselves and their business and getting better and
26:01
if anything is to be learned I mean I think you know again it’s the vrma is in
26:07
the position to you know be able to do these things and bring this in and bring this into a part of the organization but
26:13
and I think everyone’s the beneficiary because it’s going to force them to do new and exciting things that everyone
26:18
wants to see from brma right like I I think that being able to do that in
26:25
in its spread and and get a creative mindset and start doing new things is
26:32
what I hear more often than not like people are just tired of the same and
26:37
that’s a challenge and you know but again I also think it’s going to take the membership of the RMA to get active
26:44
and make those changes right it’s you know the vendors and the managers are going to have to get involved in in work
26:49
with vrma to make the changes that you know they feel like they want to see within the organization
26:55
my personal take is like that’s what it it will take is people getting involved I think it can and will happen I think
27:02
for this uh the you know for the organization to succeed which we all want
27:08
um and yeah I just if you don’t do it somebody else will and we’re seeing that
27:14
right now now what you know a lot of the folks you know at the STI wealth
27:21
conference you know particularly that you know many other speakers and whatnot like some are you know definitely a part
27:28
of vrma and active but if it could get more of you know more of those folks active in vrma like think about the
27:35
possibilities right 100 100 yeah there are certain players like if V army was
27:42
was mine and I’m running vrma there’s certain players and there’s certain you
27:47
know players I mean like like have a following that you know have a bunch of you know social in the like we know that
27:54
world runs on social and it’s all like it’s very you know I think if VMA would
28:00
reach out to some of these people give a few come on let’s work together let’s let’s bring this in I’m going to take
28:07
care of you we’re going to get you a speaking spot um let’s go ahead and it would be super
28:12
smart I think kind of oh this is a great kind of how good I mean we saw but we do
28:17
see that this year shout out to Brooke like Brooke was out there Brook’s doing this thing yeah no I mean
28:23
oh yeah yeah yeah the other way like so I what I’m thinking but I think pulling
28:29
it because you need more of both going each direction right like that’s why you have to pull it in right
28:35
it’s like it’s like this is the tag tape or the duct tape of the conference world like how do we get them to talk better
28:43
together how do we get us to work together in an alliance not as in three separate or four separate or five
28:49
separate different conferences and you got to look at it from a vendor standpoint as well like like we are you
28:55
know direct is a scrappy startup guest source of Scrappy startup Tech tapes uh
29:01
Scrappy startup right there isn’t infinite money to be going ahead and
29:06
attending at all these conferences me in my role I had to go and look at all the
29:11
whole landscape of conferences for the year knowing that there’s going to be two or three more like events that are
29:16
peppered in that I just need to attend so I have to budge like side budget that money set it aside and I have to pick
29:23
and choose yeah not all of us have the the guesty money and the TNS money and
29:30
the you know the whole inhabit money that could go to everything we don’t we have to you know if if we worked better
29:36
together we made maybe take some of these conferences and consolidate them or like have a these two entities
29:44
together to make this power conference that might be one day longer although there’s so many different things that
29:49
could be done I think that I think people are starting to think about it but you know just like the consolidation
29:56
of tech we’re going to have to actually look at the consolidation of travel in
30:01
regards to comfort and let’s talk about the sustainability side of this as well of like and like what we need to do as
30:09
an industry to you know you know we can’t just all be globetrotting everywhere to go ahead and it just it
30:16
doesn’t make sense environmentally like for ethically I can list all the Elise
30:23
I mean that’s a good point Johnny you bring up an excellent point around the sustainable aspect of it also right and
30:31
I think what we’ve seen in what we’re seeing now you know in terms of even you
30:37
know yes the the economics of it like people are looking at Roi right now right like you know there’s you know
30:43
being honest about like where we are within this space and you know there’s the ROI question comes
30:52
up quite a bit you and I both know like we talk about it all the time with people and you know managers and others
30:57
and and John I think even you know from your perspective uh you know as you know
31:03
where you sit in the space too I’m sure you see it like people are calculating you know their returns and as things get
31:10
expensive we’re seeing people make decisions and I think you see that on you know the amount of people that
31:16
aren’t at these places uh as well let’s talk about the positives and there are a
31:22
lot of positives about Str wealth I want to talk what was your your favorite
31:27
I I think I think John and I have talked and we had the we both had this our favorite presentation and scr wealth who
31:34
it was was really lightning um and I I would have taken that at any conference as like uh wow what a great what a great
31:41
presentation John what what was your you know takeaways on like the positive presentations here
31:46
well again it was packed with a lot of great content right and
31:52
um you know I was sitting and listening to pretty much every you know every uh
31:58
presentation there are a couple that I had to step out for you know some other things but let me just kind of give a
32:03
shout out to you know cut you know at least some of the people who are presenting if I can so will Flicker and
32:09
Julie George MC the whole thing uh Tony and uh Sarah Robinson the real estate
32:14
Robinsons uh had something on social media which you know kind of woke me up
32:21
and I was like you know what I should start doing videos and you know things like that right uh there was Jeff
32:26
Hampton of legal and you know you don’t usually talk about how to set up your your uh you know your Legal Foundation I
32:35
like that one I actually I actually caught some of that as well that was a that was a great a great pivot that was
32:42
good yeah and you know everyone runs in for that same problem and you’re someone who’s soft you know solved it right uh
32:48
Avery Carl Kenny Bedwell and then my boy Cody Woods was on the panel uh on data
32:55
and you know what not the Noah and Marco I really liked uh Mike mccallowitz’s
33:03
um you know profit first presentation I have been you know I’ve I’ve been
33:08
exposed to it many times I never took the action literally I came back home went uh
33:15
Thursday and then on Friday I went to my bank and opened up the additional account so that I could start practicing
33:22
the profit first so uh you know that was the kick in the pants for me but that
33:29
was that was the keynote by the way in the keynote speaker I mean that’s amazing to have a keynote speaker like
33:34
that for me both last year and this year I resonate a lot with what Mike Shogun has
33:40
to present right so um last year she was talking all about kind of like mindset and if if you
33:46
believe you can you know you can achieve something and you work towards it every day it works and like that really
33:55
resonated with me I started implementing some of his uh tactics and it has worked
34:00
right and so this time he was talking about boutique hotels and that’s
34:05
something that I’m you know I’m look very interested in getting into so that was important but for me the more
34:10
important part was he talked about like the Journey of Str like side hustle going all the way to an scr chairman
34:17
right so once you’re a chairman it’s like completely passive right you check in once a week and that’s about it
34:25
and so kind of looking on the time scale you know where I see myself on the Ohana
34:31
stay side and my wife is taking over Ohana’s day so you know I’m on that path
34:38
um you know I’m kind of like I am the CEO but you know there are still things that I need to shed in
34:44
order to get towards the chairman you know side of things right and so those
34:51
things that Mike Shogun shared um it really resonated a lot with me and
34:56
those are the things that I’m going to be referring back to throughout the year uh you know for everything Mike Sugar’s
35:03
presentation was my favorite as well and and the the reason in looking at it and
35:09
kind of to expand at least my my version of it is that you know great he talked
35:14
about like valuations and and talking about you know looking at Acquisitions of you know and I’m not in that business
35:22
or mindset but it was really intriguing to see the you know that step but but
35:28
where it went to for me is him just talking about you know again chairman
35:33
role right like how do you get yourself there how do you go ahead and surround yourself with people that you trust that
35:39
are going to go ahead and and do everything for you and it’s it was building of people building of a a team
35:47
that that this does what they need to do that that understands and like everyone whether you’re going in to a boutique
35:56
hotel side of things or if you’re staying strictly in Str like the knowledge that came out of that for me was like [ __ ] every one of these these
36:04
property management companies if they would look at a little bit more like Mike’s looking at it um are gonna it’s everything’s gonna run
36:11
a little bit more smoothly everything’s gonna be you’re you know if we’re looking at profitability
36:16
this is the key like this is how you go ahead and get there and and I took more
36:21
out of that from a vendor standpoint that that is not a property manager I’m never going well I’m not gonna say never
36:28
right now on my trajectory is I’m not going to be a property manager right that’s not what I’m doing but I still
36:34
took a lot out of how he’s running his business in business as him and his wife it was great it was a really thoughtful
36:41
well well thought out well presented presentation yeah no so
36:48
Mike’s presentation always resonates you know resonates with me and you know that’s kind of the you know the steps
36:54
that I Aspire towards uh in my businesses of course you know Bill Faith had his presentation on kind of the
37:01
active steps to take now to plan towards your retirement
37:07
um conceptually that you know that makes sense but like having a weekly meeting with my wife on you know all the steps
37:13
that I I don’t think I have the discipline to do um but you know it is like you know
37:20
being if you’re deliberate about something then you’re most likely going to achieve it right that’s really the message that
37:26
that bill of Faith was uh get you know uh sharing the woman’s panel with Rachel
37:32
Gainsborough Kristen uh shulgren Avery Carl Sarah Robinson Julie George I mean
37:39
man these women are kicking ass right yeah like they’re kicking ass Beyond
37:45
like you know anything I could even imagine for myself and you know it was it’s just you know it does it doesn’t
37:51
have to be women’s panel but it happens to be the woman’s panel right like and I mean we’re one of the few
37:58
Industries where like we’re looking at a close to 50 50 split maybe even higher
38:04
60 40 split you know I don’t know of the exact numbers and maybe in the day you have it of like women CEO like c-suite
38:12
level like the SDR world has a lot of powerful and
38:18
I you know I don’t want downplaying them you know and that’s on the vendor side of the business right and not even
38:24
talking about the amounts property management companies out there right like that are our leading Brands and
38:30
organizations and companies right like I think it’s a very interesting panel add a vrma or one of these where you
38:38
take a a Rachel caseberg and you take a vendor side like to High’s top CEO and
38:43
you take another professional like like yeah someone like that that would be a
38:49
really interesting panel from five different verticals all within the Str space but all that I think that
38:58
could be that could be pretty interesting panel and then have someone like uh Amy Hideout or someone moderate
39:05
it you know like again I think there’s there’s an interesting play there
39:12
yeah no I think that’d be awesome I think it’s because our space is like
39:18
super entrepreneurial so like anyone can get started with anything
39:23
right and I think that’s why we have such a diverse you know inclusive I you
39:30
know and it’s not even inclusive it just happens right it’s not like we need a CEO who is a woman it’s like you’re
39:38
gonna check in the box and going ahead and putting in there or making up a a c-suite like a deic suite space just to
39:45
go ahead and check that freaking box exactly it’s like they’re Founders too like like Maddie and like in Margo like
39:53
they’re they’re Founders like like all these people in these space they’re Founders right Amy heino like
40:00
what she does an inspection what she’s done in the space like and people don’t know that she’s associated with like the
40:05
editing like in the early stages of that like right like this isn’t it’s not
40:11
something that was like oh we need to highlight this so like let’s create this in the industry it’s already happening
40:17
and been happening in our industry and continues to proliferate through every side of the business in our industry and
40:23
I think exactly we need to be showcasing that more and I think that’s why I really like that panel idea John sorry
40:29
I’m stuck on that I’m gonna have to make that happen that’s a good one I’ll give you credit for that the
40:39
let’s and anymore I mean I I don’t want to I don’t want to you know not shout out
40:44
um Mark uh from Bruce Lee as well Mark Simpson from Bruce Lee um I’m not looking at the list
40:52
um Derek from that girl also yeah that was awesome a couple more shout outs um
40:59
Andrew based on safely did a really amazing job talking about insurance of all things right making me exciting
41:05
Brooke um Brooke fintory had a great presentation I recently signed up with Brooke to uh
41:12
through my inventory so I’m a fan and uh like you know like we were talking like Brooke is an amazing human being on top
41:19
of being an amazing business person and everything else so a shout out to him and the and there are others but the
41:26
last person I want to shout out Noble Crawford was on a panel on midterm rentals but he was out of time but he
41:33
had so much like knowledge to share his new uh Target for midterm rentals are
41:41
airline pilots and stewardesses who need you know three-month stays in different
41:46
cities right right and he was out of time but he’s like dude I gotta share this like he kept on dropping these
41:52
nuggets so and I was just like dude you’re so awesome like not just like
41:57
adhering to the time he went like five minutes over because he had to share like what what this new uh you know area
42:04
was all about the noble and I connected a little bit and uh we’re gonna get Noble on the on the podcast soon uh okay
42:11
we want to hear his story um we wanna there’s so many there’s a lot of the people that we’ve chatted out that we have had of the podcast a lot that we
42:18
haven’t uh need Michael on Michael talked about is what is what’s this partner’s name I am on in their podcast
42:25
shoot CR Secrets um well Emmanuel palny
42:30
yeah so I was talking to them they’re going to get us on their podcast talk about derailed
42:35
um and what we’re doing over here in no BS but we want to get them on want to talk to them but definitely want to yeah
42:40
shout out to Noble I’m excited to get him on the podcast and learn more about what they’re doing with the midterm
42:46
medals yeah yeah and I heard you I heard Julie and will were killing it as the uh
42:51
as the moderators of the accomplishment so shout out to them they they killed it I mean they they kept it going they made
42:59
it fun um can I that one point when uh Mark Simpson was on stage right I mean this
43:05
was obviously all planned but you know Mark Simpson says I’m the guy you know Airbnb does not doesn’t want you to know
43:11
about and then we’ll we’ll Slicker comes out slaps uh Mark and says get my Airbnb out
43:19
of here please mouth right that’s funny hey that’s awesome I mean
43:25
all right I’m gonna go ahead and do it shout out to will like I I’ve seen him
43:31
I saw Will at the book direct show which he he helped co-run with Damien and
43:36
everyone down in Miami uh he is grown immensely as a speaker as a presenter in
43:44
a short amount of time um he is he’s coming of his own he was
43:50
great at book direct show no I’m not discounting but he was definitely a little nervous there huge shout out to will Slickers because
43:57
like he is he’s stepping up he’s stepping into some shoes that he I don’t know if he knew that he could do it the
44:03
way he’s doing it he’s doing a great job and so this is this is me shouting out to will congratulations
44:09
um it was it was fun to watch him at Str wealth and I just put one
44:17
thought in your head yes think of where lots of us in the industry were three
44:22
years ago right so right as the pandemic was hitting where a lot of us are now right so we’ll
44:29
um Mike Shogun you guys myself even right like there’s been tremendous growth and shift
44:38
in the industry in the three years and in most Industries this kind of growth would take decades
44:44
you wouldn’t even imagine that you can do that and I kind of wake up and pinch
44:51
myself every morning I’m like what where was I three years ago and where am I now and like wow like this industry has
44:57
given so much you know back to me personally and so that’s kind of where I like you
45:03
know when I when I share my experiences and everything it’s because it’s given so much to me I’m like you know why not
45:10
share you know share what I’ve learned along the way so I’m I’m jumping on what
45:15
you said about will even Julie George I met her in 2019 I was the only person who had actually met Julie George in the
45:22
short-term Rental World on you know in the United States and during covet the ongoing joke was John’s the only person
45:29
who can validate that I actually exist right right not just something or
45:34
whatever you got it was um I can’t remember what that is and now you know she’s empty she’s everywhere
45:40
right so it’s like three years is not a lot of time and we’ve made some huge
45:46
shifts so just put that in perspective that way well with that and I I love that and uh thank you so much for
45:53
joining us uh we have to wrap up this episode we’ll have you on again soon uh
